Shavasana

“Lying flat on the ground with the face upwards, in the manner of a dead body, is shavasana. It removes tiredness and enables the mind (and the whole body) to relax.” (Hatha Yoga Pradipika).???? In modern hectic times people are always on hyper mode, they hardly allow themselves to slow down and focus on self-awareness. People turn up for sweaty workout and once it’s finished and they are directed to lay on their backs in perfect stillness for 5-10 minutes, many start to do the exact opposite- fidgeting, scratching, staring, fake coughing. Or worse- packing up and leaving before the class has even ended! ???? I assume some people negatively associate lying down with being lazy and wasting time and therefore, they don’t really get the importance of shavasana. However, I think it is impossible to convince people how important shavasana is. It is something that each person must experience and accept individually. There is no way to deny the benefits once we finally feel this deep relaxation. This posture brings a meditative state of rest, which may help in the repair of tissues and cells, and in releasing stress. It helps to reduce anxiety, insomnia and headaches. It is meant to be a culmination of the venture as a whole, where you rejuvenate and take in what you need from the time spent on your yoga practice. Once we begin to get a taste of what Shavasana must be like, if we were to finally achieve it, we will never question its importance again. ????????
