Hanumanasana

We all have ‘nemesis’ yoga pose, which is especially challenging for us. People who lift weights and run a lot are very likely to have Hanumanasana (Front Splits) as their nemesis pose due to tight hamstrings and hip flexors. ???? The problem is that approaching Hanumanasana, many people take ‘all or nothing’ approach. ‘Either I can do splits, or I can’t (and don’t even need to bother)’, not realizing that many possibilities and variations lie in between ‘full splits’ and ‘no splits’. Instead of ‘all or nothing’ we can view Hanumanasana as a journey and disassemble its elements for more ease and insight. We can use props and variations for more stability in the pose and for accommodating various degrees of flexibility. Focus less on what it looks like and more on what it feels like! Working slowly through the steps of Hanumanasana and finding the variation that works for you makes the splits practice more accessible and more enjoyable. I don’t do ‘Full Splits in 3 Weeks’ challenges or make promises, I believe that in yoga people should progress at their own pace and not feel the pressure of the end result. Whether you end up doing the full splits or not is not so important, it’s more about the journey and the things you learn about yourself and your body on your way.
