Immunity is an ability of the organism to resist infections and toxins, and strong immune system is very important for our health. The lymphatic system plays an integral part in the immune functions of our body. It is the first line of defence against diseases. This network of vessels and nodes transports lymph fluid containing antibodies and lymphocytes (good) and bacteria ( bad). Here are some ways to strengthen the immune system and get the lymph flowing:1. Unlike blood, which moves as a result of heart pumping, lymph moves by muscular contractions. Physical exercise, such as yoga asanas, is a key to keep lymph flowing. 2. The movement of lymph is also affected by gravity, so any time when your head is below your heart (yoga inversions or half inversions like Downward dog and Standing Forward bend), lymph moves into respiratory organs, where germs often enter the body. When you return to an upright position from the inversion, gravity drains the lymph, sending it through your lymph nodes for cleansing. 3. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing is a great way to move lymph towards lymphatic channels. Our body has far more lymph than blood, so pranayama is yoga, as well as slow deep breathing throughout the day will help to move lymph properly: circulate good fluids in the body and remove bad toxins. 4. Balanced diet is imperative for strong immunity and good health. Yoga encourages intuitive eating in moderation, a simple diet with plenty of whole foods, mostly plant- based, and avoiding sugary and processed food.5. Reducing stress levels is paramount for strong immune system. Again, yoga practice offers great benefits for mind and body, helping to control stress and find harmony and balance through physical practice, pranayama, meditation and some lifestyle changes.
